Maya Angelo said when someone tells you who they are, believe them the first time. The GOP has shown us their plan, they have had a taste of it and they are not letting that bone go. Ever. We got a real fight on our hands. I just hope we haven't already lost.
Alicia Norman: Hey, Friend, glad to meet up with one of my favorite friends on one of my very favorite postings -- CellyBlue (I do know this!).
CellyBlue really got into the history with Civil-War Arizona and the 19th century campaign of the American Medical Association (AMA) against abortion. I had known about the 19th c. AMA efforts. I had not realized that the movement was in part against competition from midwives. In the 19th c., my bet would be on the woman getting overall better care from experienced midwives. With all due respect to the AMA, the state of their practice in the 19th c. was such that when President James Garfield was assassinated, the medical removal of the round was successful and the patient's chance to recover should have been excellent. The bad news was that the medical doctors were . . . unsanitary . . . and sepsis (from the doctors!) set in, and the patient, our President, suffered anguish with sepsis until his death from what today would be medical malpractice.
So, in the 19th c., my money would have been on the midwives.
The Arizona Supreme Court decision -- we are only implementing the law -- is absurd. So many 19th c. laws have gone unenforced because of their imbecility. The old example, don't shoot rabbits from a moving tram in San Francisco, is one I was taught in the 1950s. (On second thought, with all the guns, I might revive that outdated law! LOL!)
Your comment, Alicia, raises a good point. Did you read Joyce Vance's post about the Alabama Secretary of State's purging of thousands of voters from the rolls.
Even with Future President Kamala Harris WINNING (oh, please God, YES!), we STILL have Alabama, and perhaps worse, Texas as crazy states.
You and I probably agree: Winning means restoring life to sanity in all of America, not just Blue states, and restoring humane practices and civil rights in TEXAS.
TEXAS is a bullying state government, and this is happening under the Biden Administration. With our Federal system, we cannot always control all the civil rights violations, even though we will bring in the Department of Justice. But Greg Abbott, Texas Governor, has a lot of energy for his vicious inhumanity. We have this civil rights fight in many states, even during Biden or Harris.
So, we need to win with our Joyful Warrior, Kamala Harris, but CellyBlue's column (and that of Joyce Vance) make clear: Having a good President is only part of the battle.
That part of the battle is PARAMOUNT, because a second Trump, neo-fascist regime is unthinkable..
But we need a House with Statesman, Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker (third in line for the Presidency today is Alfred E. Neumann, "What me worry!" (Mad Magazine), namely, Michael Johnson.
The same Michael Johnson who apparently was behind, "Let's pray together, brother" with vicious racist Clay Higgins:
Oh, Alicia, I am thankful for CellyBlue, for Joyce Vance, and friends like YOU -- there is so much that makes a ZANY world out there. We friends have to hold our arms together and love the ways of the late John Lewis, "We are all People" and "create good trouble":
John Lewis is one of the most beautiful persons ever that we have had in our recent history. In the Spirit of John Lewis, you, CellyBlue, Heather Cox Richardson, Joyce Vance are helping our Free Spirit and keeping the flame of "Good trouble."
I don’t live in Arizona but as I understand it, Supreme Court justices there come up for retention election, meaning yes keep them if they get a majority of the vote or no, they will be replaced by the governor if they don’t. Two of the five who voted for the 1864 law are on the ballot in November, Bolick and King. Those in Arizona should keep that in mind when they vote this year as this is a way to get rid of them.
How could a law from 1864 be valid? For fifty years Roe was the law and anything else after that was no good. Besides the bastard that brought about this ridiculous bill was a serial child rapist that kidnapped his victims from their homes. Married them and then left them. But these are the people that made laws. Seriously, these people are insane. Making children child brides, then changing the laws to make them work like slaves, without breaks is worse than the laws in places like China. Or countries that have children labor. Since they can bring such laws from a long time ago, bring back slavery, take away rights to vote from women and blacks. Send the statute of liberty back to France, we don’t mean what she represents anymore. Bring back lynching and segregation with Jim Crow, secede from the union. Any state that wasn’t a state in 1864, you are not part of the union. Go back to being territorial places. You see how ridiculous that sounds? That how it sounds when you say it out loud.
An interesting side note: Jessica Valenti of the substack "Abortion Every day" was the one who outed the judge who recused himself, eventually MSM picked it up and shamed him into it, but prior to her exposing him, he said he would not recuse.
Marilyn Lands ran on women’s reproductive rights and won by a landslide here in Alabama. She has given me hope for this state and country when little else has recently.
Sometimes it is early fundamental indoctrination and abuse : see "Shiney Happy People" about how fundamentalists like the Duggars, literally beat the curiosity out of babies, it is called "Blanket training. Google it.
Often, it is greed, and trying to keep their undeserved privilege, lest someone else get equal rights. It is always racism in that case.
Same as people who vote for lowering taxes on the very wealthy—thus lowering the tax base that supports public schools, safety, transportation and health. Then they complain about the potholes, crime and price of drugs.

Not too extreme.
They want to keep us from voting
Like cattle.

you speak truth, and deserve a huge megaphone so more will hear.
People are shocked this happened in AZ.
I am not sure why. They wee not hiding what they would do.
It's just an FYI. I'm talking about low info voters, some even conservative-leaning, who didn't think this would happen in AZ.
Marilyn Lands ran on women’s reproductive rights and won by a landslide here in Alabama. She has given me hope for this state and country when little else has recently.
What is it with women that vote against their own self interest??
