The uprising started with slaves stealing gunpowder and a trove of weapons, beheading the shopkeeper, and raiding, which was ultimately stopped because worshipping Presbyterians carried pistols. Yes, South Carolina required WHITE men to carry pistols with them at church worship. So, there were a lot of white Presbyterians . . .
At the time of the Constitutional Convention, the South REMEMBERED that and DEMANDED the South to be allowed to draft white men -- INCLUDING ABOLITIONISTS AND CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS -- to carry arms to prevent a slave uprising.

The First Amendment comes initially from the "Glorious Revolution" of 1688, when, Parliament crowned William and Mary -- in preference to the Catholic James Stuart -- under the condition of acceptance by the Crown of the Bill of Rights (1688), with such rights as those of the First Amendment, Freedom against self-incrimination, a ban on Bill of Attainder, and the right of Habeas Corpus (which, of course, in turn, had existed from the time of the Magna Carta).
So -- this, as you point out, IS who America is and has been and it IS about race.
Never forget: John Edgar Hoover -- head of the FBI from 1919-1972 (!!) had viewed the Civil Rights Movement as allied with Soviet Communism. Edgar Hoover infiltrated Civil Rights organizations with Agents provocateurs. And never forget: Edgar Hoover personally tried to induce Dr. Martin Luther King to commit suicide.
We should never have such aborted memories as to forget these key and damning facts.
