Those who seek to place us in thrall,

they fear knowledge most of all.

*Shakespeares words must be spoken to be understood, must be heard to be appreciated.*

A wonderful piece, but that was my favorite line. We had to read Shakespeare at my high school but we didn’t get see it or hear it. Which is, of course, the way it was meant to be appreciated. To paraphrase Churchill, I had finish school before I could begin my education.

In Alabama, we’re not only banning Shakespeare and books like To Kill a Mockingbird, but the Mayor of Ozark is calling for all public libraries to be closed. Perhaps, not so surprisingly in this white Christian nationalist state, he has a lot of support.

A bill is moving through the House that will prosecute librarians who allow minors to check out “obscene” material. I would bet my life on the fact that most of these people have never set foot in a library nor would be the type to understand the vital role public libraries serve.

I have had a library card since I was in elementary school. I have even paid an annual fee to have a Jefferson County library card when I lived outside of their large library system.

These politicians are doing this in the name of God and the Dead Sea Scrolls apparently. Ironically, as you also pointed out, their dear Bible falls under their broad obscene umbrella.

I do not believe we need politicians to dictate what parents allow their children to read. We have the internet for Chrissakes if they want porn. I, at age 46, have never come across pornography in the library. Maybe I haven’t looked hard enough?
