I would like to believe that we are not all judged by our worst deeds. Just like the story of Hunter Biden’s life, context matters. Addiction takes people down a dark, lonely path and destroys so many lives. These people are not inherently bad or evil. In fact, I believe that many feel so much more than others. Many have past traumas and abuse.

I am thankful every day that my past traumas and chronic illnesses have not lead me down the path of addiction. Maybe I’m not genetically wired for it? I have tried and have access to both illicit and legal drugs. They just never “took”, but I know that it could have easily went the other way. Does it make non-addicts feel superior? I can feel it in their judgments and punishments.

As a young pharmacist, I felt this superiority and disdain for my patients who were obviously suffering from addiction. For my patients, who called multiple times a day, trying to get their narcotics filled early. I admit it does get exhausting. I also admit, I had no idea what I was talking about.

At 46, I have so much more grace and compassion for addicts. I finally have understanding. I may have not walked in their shoes, but I have walked along side them. This does not excuse their behaviors or actions, but it allows me to love them despite of it.

Hunter Biden has committed crimes because of his addiction, but I believe he’s being held up as an example of the moral inferiority of Democrats. Republicans are pointing their finger and laughing holding their belief in their moral superiority over our heads. If you believe hate makes you morally superior, then I feel sorry for you. MAGA republicans and their cult followers absolutely do not have my compassion. They don’t even have addiction as an excuse.
